you have heard paul ryan and other members of the romney/ryan team make that suggestion. they think the media is ready to write the obama comeback story. it's romney's proposition to try to stand in the way of that. >> how much concern are you hearing from both camps about the fine line they have to walk in terms of attacking while in this pretty delicate town hall style format where regular voters don't like that kind of vitriol? >> the bottom line is, when you attack people, if i were to attack you right now, your negative ratings would go up. people watching the show would think less of you. mine would, too, because people would think less of me for attacking. that's the delicate dance the candidates have to do. think the town hall makes that a challenge. >> jake tapper, our senior white house correspondent, soon to be chief who knows where he'll go from there. jake, thank you very much. he has a big show today. his guests include ohio senator rob port nan. bo biden, son of joe biden. and our own martha raddatz, the moderator of the veep debate. and we'll have coverage

ryan saying mitt romney's performance makes it more difficult for him. people are suggesting that vice president joe biden is gaffe-ridden and incompetent. what are you expecting from this debate? >> i will go ahead and i would say i'd set the bar pretty high for biden because i think he's a much better debater than obama. one of the reasons biden ended up on the ticket with obama in 2008 was that in 2007 and 2008 running against hillary clinton, running against barack obama, it was biden who are often than not who would steal the show at those democratic debates. it never actually translated into votes for him but he impressed people in the obama campaign as somebody they wanted to have out there. you go farther back in his career when he first ran for president in 1988, he got derailed by a bit of a plagiarism scandal, but when he was using his own words, he was one heck of an orator. that was his reputation. a really strong communicator. i look at biden and his debate skills and communication skills, and i say escapable of doing what barack obama eith

last night mitt romney and paul ryan played to a large crowd in lancaster, ohio. there was a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of excitement in the air. and in large part because they believe the republicans believe they've won these first two debates. governor mitt romney had a pretty strong performance out in denver ten days ago. paul ryan had a pretty solid performance two nights ago down in kentucky. but that excitement and energy notwithstanding there's a lot of work left to be done for this ticket here in ohio. the president still shows a lead here in ohio, even though that lead has been chipped into over the last week or two, by about half in some of these polls. putting mitt romney within striking distance of the president. now, he may still, mitt romney may still have a challenge, a hurdle to clear with some undecided voters here. and that's surrounding this auto bailout. the president of course supported that bailout, pushed it through. the president and his campaign says that bailout saved hundreds of thousands of jobs not just in detroit but here in ohio and el
